After his arm was pulled and he seemed to punch an opposition coach, University of Michigan coach Juwan Howard erupted in a rage, turning a typical college basketball game into a viral phenomenon.

Michigan lost 77-63 to Wisconsin, and as the two teams shook hands at the end of the game, Wisconsin's head coach, Greg Gard, attempted to seize Howard's hand after Howard looked sluggish in shaking it.

Howard, who played for the Miami Heat and was a part of Michigan's renowned "Fab Five" in college, was said to be furious because Gard took a timeout with 15 seconds remaining in the game with a 15-point advantage, according to multiple accounts.

In a video of the altercation, Howard seems to grab Gard when he doesn't give a handshake, and the two looks to be having a heated conversation.

When Howard squeezes his way back into the middle of the throng and delivers a punch that looks to connect with the head of Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft, players and coaches from both teams begin to move in to separate the head coaches.

In a scenario reminiscent of the legendary altercation between the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers at the Palace of Auburn Hills, outside Detroit, in 2004, which became known as "The Malice in the Palace," players, coaches, and others on the court became caught in a scrum.

According to the video of the event, Howard had to be restrained by members of his squad at least twice.

At a press conference, Howard stated he told Gard he "would remember that," alluding to the timeout Gard called in the waning seconds of the game.

Howard went on to add that when Gard grabbed his arm, he was taken aback.

"I think it was highly uncalled for him to touch me as we verbalized and spoke," Howard added. And that's exactly what occurred. That's how things get out of hand. "

When asked what he thought had transpired, Gard mentioned Howard's dissatisfaction with the timeout.

"I'll leave it at that since he didn't like it when he came through the handshake line," Gard added.

On social media, some made jokes about the altercation, while others took a more serious tone, demanding Howard be punished for numerous games as a result of his actions.

A review will be conducted, according to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, and disciplinary action will be considered.

Regardless of the precipitating causes, there is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to enter into a violent conflict with others, he stated.

Manuel expressed regret to Wisconsin officials.

In a statement, the Big Ten Conference, which includes both teams, stated that "prompt and appropriate disciplinary action" will be taken after its own investigation.

A request for comment from the University of Wisconsin was not immediately returned.
